Featured Agency: Lord’s Cupboard

Posted on July 15th, 2011

The Lord’s Cupboard of Jefferson County’s mission is to inspire and involve the community in the gathering of food and monetary donations as well as to seek support of community members to distribute that food in an appropriate and fair manner as ordained by the Board.

The Cupboard’s “clients” are either self-identified or qualified and referred by the local office of the Iowa Department of Human Services. The Lord’s Cupboard is located at 54 South B Street in Fairfield, and is open to distribute food to needy residents between 1 PM and 4 PM weekdays. Proof of residency, such as a recent utility bill, is required.

The Lord’s Cupboard of Jefferson County (Iowa) serves as the county’s sole emergency food pantry. Each month, they serve between 75-100 families by providing food and other essentials.

The Lord’s Cupboard depends heavily on an enthusiastic group of local volunteers. New volunteers are always welcome and are trained to fill grocery orders, stock shelves, clean the facility and assist area residents when they come in for their food pick-up.

The Lord’s Cupboard of Jefferson County was established in December 1982 by Tom Smith and Norma Bogner operating in a hallway of the Nazarene Church’s Family Center. Today, the Cupboard has a permanent facility at 54 South B Street in Fairfield. Their phone number is (641) 472-8457.
